With the favorable climatic conditions it enjoys it is surprising to see that Australia is lagging behind in the international race for solar energy capacity. As of September last year the vast country had a total of only 300 MW of energy generation through solar PV panels.

These relatively low figures when compared to other nations, is primarily because of the cost per KW of solar panels meant they weren’t as economically viable as the cost of coal produced electricity. This was up until the last couple of years, when the government stepped in with generous incentives and solar schemes to change that imbalance.

So since 2009 though Australia has made great strides in making the solar industry more professional and better regulated, and as the industry has boomed worldwide manufacturing costs have dropped considerably.

As a result of this, together with improved solar technology providing greater energy efficiency and smaller sized panels, the cost per KW of solar power has been halved and solar PV systems are much more affordable for an average family then before.

With considerable government investment support for renewable energy projects, the coming carbon tax to provide more funding for research and development, and increased investor interest in large scale solar and other projects, the country can be considered as a sleeping giant in the renewable energy field.

With it widely tipped as being one of the top growth industries in the next 10 years, the solar energy capacity of Australia is expected to climbrapidly upwards, and hopefully we will soon belong to this list of world leaders in solar energy generation;

Germany

Despite an often gloomy sky Germany is clearly the highest electricity producer from solar photovoltaic energy. With almost 17,000 MW of solar energy capacity from solar farms, the business and industrial sector and nearly a quarter of a million private solar panel systems, Germany clearly outruns any solar industry to date.

The success of the country is primarily because of the renewable energy act of 2000 which was designed to reduce the cost of solar panel systems, and improved energy efficiency from the economies of scale. With the country nearly saturated now though other younger solar countries will have the chance to emulate their success, like Australia whose government has drawn on Germany policy as a role model.

Spain

Spain is one of the most advanced nations in solar energy development, and coupled with it’snatural blessings (the country has one of the longest sun hours in Europe) it’s not surprising it his home to over 3000 MW of total solar energy capacity. The country currently holds second spot as the most installed photovoltaic in the world.

However with the recent delays and issues over government subsidies and programs, along with economic setbacks, the country is now only slowlyprogressing its solar industry and is on the verge of being outrun by other nations.

Japan

Although Japan is more likely to be known for its nuclear power plants, the truth is the Japanese alreadyhave the highest solar power capacity after Germany and Spain (over 2600 MW).

After the recent nuclear disaster as a result of a tsunami, the Japanese government is increasing its efforts to improve the solar industry instead, and develop cheaper and more efficient solar cells in the future so they can gradually replace nuclear energy.

United States

The US solar energy capacity of 1650 MW is small for its population but expected to double within a few years as the government is now working on a state level policy and numerous large scale projects. Many of the countries major corporations are also embracing solar investments, as well as making it a priority to reduce their carbon footprints by making their buildings more energy efficient and reducing carbon emissions.

Italy

The rapid growth of the Italian solar industry has been brought about by a well-designed and segmented feed in tariff scheme that encouraged more and more residents to install rooftop solar panels.

As a result Italy holds a record for one of the biggest spurts in solar capacity in a very short period of time.

Wind turbines vary from small 20watts to very large 15 megawatt units (blades of which may be taller than even the Statue of Liberty!). Of these the range 0.5 kw up to 100 kw capacity are categorized as Small Wind Turbines

Typical home applications

A typical home uses up approximately 9400 units (kwh) per annum.

If you are thinking of a wind turbine for your home electricity needs (assuming it to be a typical home) a more suitable size could be a 5 to 15 kw capacity. The vast difference in capacity is because the power generation fluctuates depending on the location and the wind velocity on the turbine.

As a rule of thumb it must be said that a Wind turbine of 3.0 kw will produce 600 kwh per month against an annual average wind velocity of 6.26 m/s, which is quit adequate for an average home application. Mind you, a small wind turbine of a capacity of 100 kw is quite a large load and the application will certainly not be a typical home.

Smaller or Micro Wind Turbines

Units having a capacity from 20 watts to 500watts are categorized as Micro or smaller turbines and are generally used for Battery Charging in recreational vehicles and sail boats or similar applications.

Cost of Energy efficiency vs. Energy production

The small wind turbine is for generating electrical Power. The cost of energy efficiency is much cheaper than the production of electrical energy. It is a good idea to work out an energy budget for your home when considering a new installation or a retrofit.

The key issue here will be to make your home more energy efficient prior to sizing the wind turbine needed. This will be more cost effective as the size of the new turbine can be reduced.

What information one must have in hand when sizing a Wind Turbine?

These data must be in your hand when selecting a wind turbine:

Estimated annual energy out put of the turbine as a function of the annual average wind speed. Maximum safe operable wind speed for the Turbine. Your Local Wind records (generally available with Wind Turbine suppliers) Your energy budget

Tips on selecting a home Wind turbine unit

Small Wind Turbines utilize horizontal axis upwind designs mostly. They incorporate two or three blade turbines which are generally made of Fiberglass The larger the diameter of the blade swept area the higher the power generated under similar conditions. The wind speed increases with the height at which the turbine is located. Higher Wind speeds generate more electricity. This also eliminates turbulence associated at lower levels. Another rule of thumb is to locate the turbine hub so that the tipoff the turbine blade is at least 10 m above the top of any obstacle within 90 m distance of the tower. Small wind turbines if fitted on steel tilting design towers it is better for maintenance and safety against high winds. Avoid using aluminium structures or towers instead of steel towers. Raising the tower height of a 10 kw turbine by 30 % may increase your capital investment by 10% but the power generation will be improved by about 25%. Do not mount Wind turbines on roof tops of houses. The noise and vibration will be unbearable within. These along with the turbulence prevailing will shorten the Turbine as well as the building structure life span Small wind turbines generally produce Direct Current (DC) as opposed to Alternating current (AC) obtained from the national power grid. Unless you want to change all your appliances to DC operation you must use a power inverter to convert the DC to AC.

Small Wind Turbines have come a long way since first developed.Today wind turbines are the fast growing energy sector investment in the world. The newer technologies available and the government sponsored grant aids make it a worthwhile investment for your new home energy installation or retrofit.

How to Save Electricity is one of the most frequently asked question. It includes everything like energy conservation or preservation of a very precious and limited public resource. Here are simple and common methods to be implemented in order to cut energy costs without compromising your lifestyle and without high costs of conservations. In some climatic conditional regions, heating and cooling expenses dominate the largest part of household energy use. In a large number of global locations, running your air conditioner at 78 instead of 72 will get you 40% of your cooling bill. There is no need for you to freeze to death or roast yourselves to obtain the reduced usage of energy and actually save your valuable money.

First step to be taken in order to answer the vital question of how to save Electricity is to make sure that filters of your cooling units are clean.

Furthermore also double check with the manufacturer of your cooling equipment or with your electric utility company to see if filters on your units need to be cleaned or replaced. Secondly there is no need to use the heating or cooling systems if no one is home. If you sure of the time that you are going to be away more than a half an hour then have a choice of completely turning off of your heating or cooling off or you also could turn it down to minimal level. Don’t turn off the heat in a cold climate because that may result in the pipes breaking.

Supplementation your main unit with portable units is a very effective way to avoid hassle of controlling the use of electricity. Using a fan helps to keep the heat away which means less use of air conditioning systems. Using portable heaters when you are asleep or otherwise staying in one room can mean less use of heat if it means that you don’t have to use the main unit or in these cases you might not even need the heating as body temperatures of a large number of people group together can with strand a lot cold.
More importantly try setting the thermostat of your system to run less frequently. You could turn your air conditioner up a few minimal degrees or your heater down by an acceptable number of degrees and you will notice that you can still be comfortable and full fill the obligation of conservation option.

However timing the opening and closing of your windows and drapes will reduce heating and cooling cost respectively depending on your local climatic settings. On those normally cold but sunny days, opening curtains and drapes while leaving windows closed will help you to keep your home with desired temperature. Opening the windows on summer nights helps cool your home. Buying storm windows in some climates reduces heating costs. Check for holes in your roof and in your pipes improves the performance of your respective systems. This can help reduce up to 10 per cent of your heating and cooling costs.

Why don’t we produce all of our energy using alternative renewable energy sources?

Best answer:

Answer by ajhidell1963
To start off, a lot of people like to turn on lights even when there is no wind turning the turbines and after sunset when the pv cell s go dead. And not everyone lives on top of a geothermal vent or next to an ocean tide generating station.

People everywhere are frustrated because they want electric cars, but the few electric cars that are available are way too expensive. A lot of folks are taking matters into their own hands and doing electric car conversions themselves. It’s not hard to do. There are plenty of electric cars kits, or manuals, that you can buy on the internet.

What is an electric car conversion? It’s when you remove the internal combustion engine from your gas vehicle and replace it with an electric motor that runs on batteries. When you’re finished, you’ll have a zero-emissions car that’s much cheaper to drive than a vehicle powered by gasoline.

Performing a conversion is a good way to boost the resell value of your car. And did you know that electric cars don’t break down as much, or need as much maintenance as gas-powered cars? That’s because electric engines have fewer moving parts. The only expense is the batteries, which you’ll need to change every few years.

In order to do a conversion, you’ll need an electric car conversion kit. Some are quite expensive because they come with parts. Others don’t include parts, but are detailed sets of instructions that show you exactly how to set everything up and do the conversion. Many of these electric cars kits tell you how to get most of the tools and parts you need cheaply, sometimes even for free.

Many kits can be downloaded right over the internet. Some come with video instruction as well. These kits usually cost anywhere from $ 30 – $ 50.

When you’re done converting your car, it should be able to go 100 miles on a single charge and travel up to 50 mph. Another benefit is that you’ll receive generous rebates from the state and federal governments for driving an electric vehicle.

“It’s clear that society is headed down this road,” said the executive chairman of Ford Motors recently. But you don’t need to wait. Electric cars kits are accessible to everyone right now. Its easy to download a kit and start building your own electric car today!
